Two lovers stationed at a remote base in the asteroid belt of Saturn are intruded upon by an anal-retentive technocrat from Earth and his charge: a malevolent eight foot tall robot.

P. J. Snyder reviewed Saturn 3 in Ares, and commented that: “Saturn 3 is a sloppy, shoddy production, of the sort that someone out there thinks SF fans just eat up. One hopes the producers and directors working the genre will realize this audience demands more than a leggy blond being chased by a robot. They may have such limited visions, but the audience doesn’t.”[25]

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 31% approval rating based on 16 reviews.[26] On Metacritic, the film holds a 9/100 based on reviews from eight critics, indicated as “overwhelming dislike”.[27] Film critic Roger Ebert gave the film one star in his review, criticising its screenplay for having a “shockingly low” level of intelligence, citing moments disregarding the laws of physics, the love triangle between Douglas, Fawcett and Keitel, as well as other details.[28]

I got directed bo this movie @klu9@lemmy.ca in the comments of another post, and realized that more people had to see it.

It’s a great example of how a good premise and decent actors can go horribly wrong. The wikipedia article has a lot of good info on how that happened. And there’s a fan site dedicated to the many ways this movie goes wrong.

I suggest you watch this movie. It’s free online and it has great set design. You’ll quickly note that Harvey Keitel’s voice sounds weird – that’s bc his voice was dubbed by a British actor who was trying to do an American accent. And about a quarter of the way through you’ll realize the plot is out of control. The thing is, it’s kind of like how when a machine starts breaking down, and you learn a lot about how machines work. In this case there’s a lot to learn about pacing, characterization, handling themes, and (especially) suspense. When these things work perfectly you don’t even notice them, but this movie is a great opportunity to see the exposed bone and torn muscle.

Ultimately, the movie is about the quality level of a bad Star Trek episode. And people do watch those bad Star Trek episodes. But y’all are b-movie enthusiasts, so I don’t need to tell you that. There are plenty of opportunities for fun cringe and bemusement in this movie.

My understanding is that Keitel had such a terrible time making the movie that he refused to come back for ADR and so had to be completely dubbed over.

        From this link: https://saturn3makingof.com/2012/10/24/something-is-wrong-on-saturn-3-making-of-saturn-3-2/

According to Starburst Magazine contributor John Brosnan (in his 1980 review of Saturn 3) – Harvey Keitel refused to post-synch his dialog and thus his entire performance was re-dubbed by English actor Roy Dotrice (father of Michelle Dotrice; who played the long-suffering Betty in the English Michael Crawford-starring TV sitcom Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em).

Just why Keitel refused is unclear, although it has been suggested elsewhere that Lew Grade had a falling-out with the actor and demanded his Brooklyn accent be replaced with the more mid-Atlantic-sounding brogue of Dotrice. Whatever the reason, the resulting monotone curiously enhances the oddness of what is already a very strange character.
