Albanese sounds like the language of Albania.

Close. Albanese is Italian for “Albanian”. It was a name given to many Albanian Christian immigrants who fled Albania when it was conquered by the Ottoman Empire. They have their own community in Italy today where they speak their own version of Albanian. It’s pretty cool. Anthony Albanese’s family definitely comes from southern Italy.

Honestly it’s a let-them-fight situation, but it seems mostly politically motivated because 1) the current head of ASPI is a former Liberal (opposition party) appointee. And 2) same day as this article came out, federal Labor announced that they’ve given provisional approval for expansion of gas drilling, processing and exporting off of the Western Australia coast up until 2070, so literally this is a small dunk to keep the lib left mollified

Oh great, more fossil fuels. People keep dribbling shit about “revolutionary optimism” and how it’s bad to be fatalistic because it disempowers people but like… It really is that bad? We’re GETTING two degrees. Probably if literally everyone did literally everything they could to mitigate CC today we would get more than the 1.5 that was previously bandied about as the absolute worst case we could tolerate and most of the world is full steam ahead on this shit. We’re extremely screwed and still would be if someone hit the Magical Overnight Communism Button right now. What are we supposed to be “working” for when even doing better than we could possibly manage would lead to borderline apocalyptic outcomes?!

Thing is I don’t believe that literally anything can save us from bare minimum hundreds of millions of excess deaths in the next half century or so. We’re already flying past a LOT of tipping points, feedback loops are only getting worse (eg, melting ice releases CO2 -> excess CO2 causes warming -> warmer air melts more ice releasing more CO2 -> and so on)

Even if the whole world stopped all GHG emissions today we would still be in for a bumpy fuckin’ ride… And we’re not going to.
