For context: Several major cities in India have private commuter shuttle bus services operated by Uber and other similar companies, intended for people to be able to get to work in relative comfort.

Mumbai does have a cheap, fairly robust, public bus system, but it’s badly maintained, massively overloaded, and the routes are a nightmare.

The powers that be figured this was a problem. So they shut the shuttle buses down. The people that use the shuttle buses are absolutely not going to use public transport, which means…they’ll have to commute with their own vehicles.

Even though that’ll most likely be a motorbike or a scooter, 60 people on motorbikes still take up a lot more space, cause a lot more pollution, and disrupt traffic a lot more than 60 people on a bus.
