Between this, Proton and Firefox’s change of terms, most of the advice I’ve seen on tech that protects your privacy seems like it’s going the way of the dino.

My general dislike for modern conservatism to the side, it does reflect a wider issue with lemmy. There is no diversity of opinion on anything. There are no niche communities. Either you like the political and tech subs and the meme subs which are, at a mininum, 60% political, or there really is nothing for you here.

The manga and anime subs can be good for keeping up with new releases, but not there’s next to no actual discussion.

While I have no issue with Republicans being shunned for their unashamed fascism, it does mean threads like this are essentially pointless because almost none will actually participate and the ones who do will be downvoted into oblivion.

One of the things that has continuously confounded me about Musk’s veneration by the modern American fascist is that one of the main accomplishments they hail him as a genius for are “his” advancements in electric cars.

Which are necessitated by Global Warming.

Which they do not believe in.

I remember reading something once, that the reason so many people didn’t believe in the threat of Global Warming was because there have been so many other threats they heard about that didn’t come to be.

Except, they didn’t just, not happen.

Overpopulation? Mass starvation? Scientists dedicated their lives to increasing agricultural production.

Y2K? Computer scientists put more man hours than some factories did during WWII to eliminate the potential bugs.

Hole in the Ozone? We eliminated the chemicals causing that particular one.

But none of that work was in the public eye for 99.9% of people. So, their lives went on as if there was never any threat. Thus, people slowly got it into their heads, consciously or not, that all predictions of destructions wrecking our way of life were bullshit.

This is the (exclusively) political version of that. Most Americans have lived in a largely functioning democracy for so long they don’t really comprehend that it’s possible for America to not be as it is. Sure, plenty of people wring their hands about encroaching authoritarianism, but they don’t see America just turning into a state where voting and free speech don’t exist.
