I said then, and I say now, that while there is a lower class, I am in it, and while there is a criminal element I am of it, and while there is a soul in prison, I am not free.

  • I deliver groceries for Walmart Spark, and last night I took one last order because it was going towards my house. I had so many problems with shopping for it, and then I get to my car and load the address and the delivery note says, “Bring inside house”.

I’ve had this note before and it’s always some asshole who wants to treat me like their butler because they paid $10 for delivery. It’s a huge time waste compared to leaving it on the stoop. “Put the milk in the fridge and put this here, and that there”. I’m not even supposed to go inside, but when I tell them that I get, “Everyone else does it” and arguing ends up taking more time than just doing it.

Anyway, I get there and it’s the sweetest little old lady named Doris. She was leaning on her walker, waiting at the door for me. She just got back from visiting her kids out of state and didn’t have any food in the house. Brought her food in and talked to her for a few minutes.

It kind of made me sad because she shouldn’t be living alone. I don’t know the situation, though. Maybe her kids have tried to get her to move in with them and she doesn’t want to.

  • Is that a mandatory tip, what you normally tip or delivery service charge?

I know someone who works at Domino’s and the pay structure is crazy at his store. He gets $15 an hour when he’s at the store, but $7.25 while he’s on deliveries. He gets $3 of the service charge, but it’s a draw, meaning he only gets it after the charges have paid off his $7.25 hourly pay. He also gets a mileage reimbursement, but it’s apparently not calculated right very often.

He still does ok, but it’s purely on tips.

  • One thing I’ve learned is that landlords love to tell lies about the renovations they’re going to do after you move in. The only time slumlords are ever motivated to fix shit is when they can’t rent it.

Not trying to victim blame, it shouldn’t be this way, but in the future demand the renovations before you sign the lease. I realize that’s hard when you need somewhere to live immediately.

Have you tried calling your local health department? A lot of health departments will do an inspection upon request, and they usually include safety items like unsafe electrical systems. In Massachusetts they have the power to issue fines and revoke the ability of the landlord to rent until they fix stuff.

  • I worked at a place that sold them and dealing with those people was exhausting. I get they have an addiction and I have empathy for that, but they sometimes engage in that addiction in the most annoying ways possible.

I used to have all these people who wanted to know what number each book of tickets was on to look for patterns, or want to buy from a book that had a lot of winners, or buy from a book with few winners, or only want late/early in a book. Then they will proceed to lose $200 10 bucks at a time.
