  • Really hoping for real API access and third-party apps.

I mean that’s the only way it will have any success. I don’t expect it to happen, but that’s historically how any of these sites have grown and flourished.

It would be funny if Digg was able to successfully reboot and take users away from Reddit, however I don’t expect it to actually happen.

Also, stating the obvious, time would be better spent improving Lemmy.

  • I watched it this past week. First episode is excellent.

    Tap for mild review-like spoilers

The rest of the series is still good, but it’s a little bit weaker in the middle. Luckily there ending is also pretty good.

It’s renewed for a second season, although I would have been happy with it just being a miniseries. (But the show definitely sets up for more seasons, so that would have had to change.)

I think the first episode will hook most people.

  • So at face value this seems unfortunate but reasonable.

HBO likely overpaid for Sesame Street, possibly as a result of a private bidding war or just to ensure an even bigger bidding war didn’t happen. A new CEO came in a few years ago, likely noticed some extra spending, but with HBO money it was easy to grow. With HBO gone and no one jumping to pick up the tab, a lot downsizing is reasonable.

Unfortunately… the timing also aligns with plans to unionize.

I expect more to this story in the coming months.

  • I’m willing to discuss UI/UX issues but that top comment is just stupid.

The first complaint is that “lemmy.world” shouldn’t exist, because websites should be dot com. That’s not a UI/UX issue, that’s just ignorance. As we all know Bluesky has also failed to pickup any users due to its URL bsky.app, you obviously can’t have a dot app website!

The second argument is worth looking at, but it’s unclear based on their comment what went wrong. If you go to Reddit and search for Brazil/Brasil do you just magically find every community you’re looking for? I doubt it. Discovery can and should be improved but this person found an instance before a community?

  • Re Bluesky I did some “I am not a lawyer” digging.

Bluesky is owned by “Bluesky Social PBC”, a Public Benefit Company registered in Delaware.

Generally speaking it means when decisions about the company are made, they must take into account how that decision benefits their stated public value. I struggled to find the specific value wording, but let’s assume it’s a reasonable one for the time being.

Unfortunately being a PBC is basically voluntary, especially when you’re still a private company. You can become a non-PBC with a simple board vote. (A public company would require a stockholder vote.)

Bluesky’s board consists of four members, one of which is Bain Capital, aka the company funding Bluesky.

So Bluesky is absolutely a better alternative to Twitter. If everyone left Twitter and moved to Bluesky that would be a monumental improvement.

However Bluesky is not a non-profit company, as the above graphic states.
