It is possible in vanilla Sims 4. You can also now pick a sim’s pronouns. (Though to be fair these features were added in later updates and the pronouns came quite a bit later I think.)

Are you an Apple user? I have that same issue with my tablet. My PC and almost all other computers I’ve used do change the numbers with caps lock.
