Boo, but jihad just means holy war like Allah means God. I literally learned the word jihad from playing FF8. When do we take borrowed words literally versus phonetically?

okmko@lemmy.worldto People Twitter@sh.itjust.works•I... Genuinely only realizing this now6·13 hours agoI’m a first gen immigrant but despite having native American English, sometimes once in a blue moon I’ll encounter a semi-rare word I’ve yet to be exposed to.
So my closest analog is that I was confused for the longest time why people kept referring to statues of figures from shoulder level upwards as busts when they never had chests or breasts or boobs or blossoms or busts!
So for the longest time not only was I confused, I would be on the lookout for statuses that depicted from breast height upwards, but I never found one, lol.
Would it be in poor taste to call these people jihadist?

And they all are quick to discard previous and current beliefs as if they never happened. It’s kind of crazy how efficient they all are at converging on the same new belief when the previous one becomes too indefensible.
okmko@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•Vance Boelter, suspect in shooting of Minnesota lawmakers, taken into custody in Sibley County1·5 days agoPm’ed you the site. I don’t want to draw more attention to it. I suspect the posting is highly curated anyway. It’s more of a bubble than r/conservative.
okmko@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•Vance Boelter, suspect in shooting of Minnesota lawmakers, taken into custody in Sibley County511·5 days agoI sometimes visit the successor site of the_donald to see them erase their memories in real-time. They were 1000% sure it was a Dem black person yesterday. They even had insider info from police connections. Today it’s crickets and false flag.
(There’s always, always, without fail, accusations of false flags. From CIA, from FBI, from antifa, from George Soros, from Bill Gates. How do you even talk to people like this?)

MHWilds runs like ass no matter the card and I’m back to playing Hoi4 in the mean time.

I personally believe with zero background knowledge that we’re just not evolved enough to have empathy beyond our physical sphere of influence. Like as an aggregate, unless we personal interact with another human, we seem to have no problem vilifying them. We seem to even be able to hate ppl who look exactly like us too, lol. Civil wars are so ridiculously common in history.
It’s like we tend to hate humans who look nothing like us or exactly like us, lol. Everything between that spectrum is acceptable.
okmko@lemmy.worldto Leopards Ate My Face@lemmy.world•Trump Voter Gets Choked Up After ICE Detains a Third of His StaffEnglish10·9 days agoThe sad part is that even if the lives of these MAGAs get worse - worse than the lives of the immigrants they look down upon in their home country, they would likely still be racist.
There are pockets in rural America, an obscenely rich country, that are borderline third world country conditions, and they still vote Republican with a sense of superiority and extreme ignorance of their relative standard of living compared to rest of the world.
It wouldn’t surprise me at all if some of them were okay with trading electricity and sewage systems (return to 1700s) for racial and religious homogeny.
If these were answers for a high school test it would get a D or something for correctness. I can’t believe an adult, a journalist no less, could be so off.

The designers of the video game Path of Exile should’ve called their super rare item “Kalandra’s Barometer” instead of “Kalandra’s Mirror”.

okmko@lemmy.worldto politics @lemmy.world•Bernie Sanders blames election loss on Kamala Harris choosing billionaires over the working class2·21 days agoAh, saviorism. Yeah that’s definitely what you’re describing.
I guess what the video is describing is yeah tangential and/or like a superset. Groups high on the power structure use those who’re lower as proxies for their vying for power/resources/etc.
okmko@lemmy.worldto politics @lemmy.world•Bernie Sanders blames election loss on Kamala Harris choosing billionaires over the working class4·21 days agoYeah. I don’t know if there’s a term for it, but the Alt-Right Book describes it too: https://youtu.be/wCl33v5969M

I learned recently that your can cut the two vertices that form the base of triangle watermelon slices as you cut the watermelon to make all the damn slices easier to eat, so they don’t collide with your cheeks. It’s seems so obvious but none of the adults around me did it growing up, lol.
