The clock is ticking down on a crucial but little-noticed part of President Donald Trump’s first round of executive orders — the one tasking the secretaries of the Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security to submit a joint report, within 90 days, recommending “whether to invoke the Insurrection Act.”

Many of us are now holding our collective breath, knowing that the report and what it contains could put us on the slippery slope toward unchecked presidential power under a man with an affinity for ironfisted dictators.

Adding to the suspense was the recent “Friday Night Massacre” at the Pentagon — the firing of the nation’s top uniformed officer and removing other perceived guardrails (i.e., the top uniformed lawyers at the Army, Navy and Air Force) standing between the president and his long-stated intention to declare martial law upon returning to power.

That’s exactly the reaction they’re looking for. They want the US population to become as disengaged from politics as ordinary Russians are. They want you to learn that same helplessness. So don’t cave. Find people you can connect with to resist together.

The only question is whether he knows he’s a Russian asset. Trump may be working for them without realizing it. All Putin would have to do is convince him he was just giving him advice, one wise ruler to another, because Trump is special and brilliant, and provide a few incentives. Trump would believe that taking the advice was all his own brilliant idea.

Keir Starmer has attempted to act as a bridge between the United States and Europe, having hosting a summit of nineteen leaders, including EU Commission president Ursula von der Leyen and Nato chief Mark Rutte, on Sunday.

Addressing MPs yesterday, the prime minister insisted the UK government will not “choose between” the US and Europe, as it attempts to secure a lasting, sustainable peace in Ukraine.

Starmer said: “I do want to be crystal clear. We must strengthen our relationship with America for our security, for our technology, for our trade and investment.”

That all sounds very unwise. I hope that behind the scenes the UK Government is less deluded.
