Only rationalists (and possibly Chat-GPT) have the spark of life. The rest of us? Unfortunately we’re computationally efficient p-zombies. Mere cardboard cutouts designed to give flavor text to motivate the main characters.

Eric Schmidt tells the US government that unfathomable amounts of power need to be spun up ASAP because if the US doesn’t make robot god first then:

If China comes to superintelligence first, it changes the dynamic of power globally, in ways that we have no way of understanding or predicting

Dedicating the US’s entire economic output to scaling corporate LLMs and filling the air with smog would at least have somewhat predictable consequences I suppose.

But I think he was also really early to understanding a lot of harms that have bit by bit started to materialize.

So what harms has Mr. Yudkowski enumerated? Off the top of my head I can remember:

1. Diamondoid bacteria
2. What if there’s like a dangerous AI in the closet server and it tries to convince you to connect your Nintendo 3DS to it so it can wreak havoc on the internet and your only job is to ignore it and play your nintendo but it’s so clever and sexy
3. What if we’re already in hell: the hell of living in a universe where people get dust in their eyes sometimes?
4. What if we’re already in purgatory? If so we might be able to talk to future robot gods using time travel; well not real time travel, more like make believe time travel. Wouldn’t that be spooky?

After Bard warned me against the perils of dropping an egg off a tower, twice, it decided to answer with the solution to the dynamic programming interview question instead of what I asked… but in Chinese lol.

Is this intelligence??

A lot of rationalism is just an intense fear of death. Simulation hypothesis? Means that maybe you can live forever if you’re lucky. Superintelligence? Means that your robot god might grant you immortality someday. Cryogenics? Means that there’s some microscopic chance that even if you pass away you could be revived in the future at some point. Long terminism? Nothing besides maybe someday possibly making me immortal could possibly matter.

I mean don’t get me wrong I’d give a lot for immortality, but I try to uhh… stay grounded in reality.
