Not all Gen X of course, but I do find this “we’re the last generation that wants to work hard” attitude out of some Gen Xers to be supremely ironic given the latchkey slacker stereotype of Gen X that persisted until the early 2000’s.
It’s definitely not a generational thing, there’s just some people that are just born itching to become old people. They want nothing more than to be grizzled old hand bemoaning the ne’r do wells younger than them so they can put themselves on a pedestal.
The pattern with The Discourse surrounding the youth is always, opinion writers talking about the sort of young people they’re around as representative of the generation as a whole. Which ends up meaning the kids of their rich friends and/or the young people that have the connections to get internships at their legacy media company. So yeah, right now that slice of gen z is wallowing in the sentiment that Trump gives them permission to be hedonistic and proud of their social status.
There’s a new steaming piece of thinkpiece shit every day about Gen Z. The one I saw the other day was about Gen Z “bare-backing,” which refers to, wait for it……… the refusal to work while off the clock. I wonder what bullshit portmanteau op-ed writers are going to come up with next to describe a normal thing that already has a normal word for it

What’s annoying me lately is the effort people seem to be making to try and turn gen Z into mini boomers too.

I got fired from my one of my first jobs like 15 years ago for refusing to work off the clock for free lol
I wish i had recorded my boss calling me and telling me to keep working off the clock when I was a minor. I’d own that gym now.
I’m going to need some help with the barebacking metaphor. Aren’t metaphors supposed to make sense?
Well that’s the thing about being a think-piece writer, you can just say shit and consulting firms around the world will treat your word as gospel
