I was just using the copy link button on Imgur and sometimes it just doesn’t work. I ended up using posting.cc this time and it worked on the first try. I think that if service is spotty Imgur doesn’t upload properly so the link it provides comes back to an empty page.
I just use the native Lemmy photo upload. Not ideal for multiple photos/albums but it bypasses dedicated hosts trying to funnel everyone to their site instead of just serving the image.
I’m on voyager/ios and haven’t run into anything like that. I half-remember reading somewhere that lemm.ee has some restrictions on media uploads, but IIRC it was more related to new accounts. There may or may not be a file size limit as well, I’m not sure. Have you tried testing with the native web interface?
I’ve never tried to use lemmy other than trough this app. I left Reddit during the great migration and this was what I found. I don’t think I’ve ever even heard it mentioned of using a web interface.
Gotcha. Very brief explainer (apologies if this is old news for you):
The main Lemmy front end software is a web page which displays data from the back end (like Reddit). Dedicated apps like mlem and voyager can pull the data from the back end and display it however they want (like how Reddit used to be). The actual website used is different depending on which instance a user is signed up on (completely unlike Reddit).
Your account is on lemm.ee, so the default web front end is https://lemm.ee/. (Mine is on slrpnk.net, so I would use https://slrpnk.net/) You can login there and try an upload - at the very least it should let you know whether the problem you’re having is with the app or not.
Mlem dev here. If you get a popup saying “Image too large”, this is because your instance has imposed a maximum file size on uploads. Different instances choose to have different limits. Consider sharing the image via another image service (https://catbox.moe/ is pretty popular on Lemmy).
You have to ensure you have the file extension to display the image otherwise it posts a link to Imgur.

I tried that but I got an error that said the file was too large. I’m using Mlem on iOS if it matters.

I use Mlem as well and it is more than likely a .ee limitation rather than Mlem.

My phone will not open catbox links. Even the one you just posted brings up a page that says safari can’t open find the website.
