I just got word that he did do something about it, and has banned the person. Hopefully this becomes more common and that kind of abuse is taken more seriously on fedia.io

Oh wow, awesome. Nice to know they’re taking things more seriously now.
fedia.io’s admin has been known to be incredibly lax when it comes to banning their own users for hostility. I’ve seen them let way worse things slide before, and only quietly intervene if it gets big and bad enough to make fedia itself look bad.
User’s account was suspended, looks like they’re taking things more seriously than they have in the past.
I think so too but I also like, don’t really care. Isolated communities of isolationist people are less consequential and ultimately conflict with the whole purpose of the Fediverse which is connection with others and individual sites cooperating to create a larger space. They don’t want that and that’s okay, they shouldn’t be encouraged to join us if they don’t want to, since they wouldn’t offer us anything worth while and wouldn’t get anything out of it themselves. Very similar to Beehaw, though the difference there is that Beehaw wanted to cooperate but brought isolation upon themselves when they killed their own network effect by shutting out the most active people posting in their communities.
That doesn’t mean they aren’t welcome here if they want to but no one should go and beg or encourage them to join like we do people on Reddit.
sh.itjust.works is probably the instance I’d recommend for new users, they have fast and easy sign-ups and is also decently large and well federated.
I’ve always criticized instances which opt to function like a club with applications for this very reason, it makes the signup process less smooth and makes it more challenging and unforgiving to the user. It doesn’t stop spammers and trolls really, it makes the instance less bearable to sign up to.
This:
Isn’t an acceptable solution for platforms which want a thriving community, or to facilitate and support migration from Reddit, and shouldn’t be the Fediverse’s go-to onboarding solution.
You can’t stop spammers and especially not trolls before sign-ups, you have to focus on stopping them after sign-ups, many instances already use automated tooling to fight spammers post-signup, some with open registration, and those few don’t have spam problems, stop using this boogyman excuse to create closed echochambers, or to be a control freak and gate signups manually. I’m not buying it as a legitimate threat and no one else should either, it’s a cheap excuse that cowards use to avoid criticism up front. Say the real reason you do it, that it’s your server and you’re digging your heels in, what gets said once we cut through all the bullshit.
If this seems like I’m angry it’s because I am, many admins of large Lemmy servers are single-handedly holding us back and making this place hostile to newcommers, in these trying times no less.
If anyone here is looking for a server that has easy signup, sh.itjust.works is one of the easiest to get into, they do have an aggressive automod so you’ll want to farm some upvotes before doing anything serious and maybe wait a while too, but they probably still are the easiest to sign up to, not asking vague questions or asking for an essay about yourself.
There’s also a very high likelihood they used AI to write the majority of their comments and replies which doesn’t bode well for them. Thinking it’s very likely they are not doing this in good faith.
I don’t think he’ll do anything about it, I’ve seen him let a lot worse shit slide before.
Most people aren’t smart enough to think about 4 dimensions. You can’t easily visualize it, most concepts using 4th dimension just use math and math is hard for many people.
I wouldn’t point them to Beehaw though, their segregated nature and difficult onboarding process make it less welcoming for newcomers to the Fediverse.
lemmy.blahaj.zone is a better choice for people who want LGBTQ friendly spaces.
Yeah most of them have atrocious moderation history and equally nasty comment history.
Works best on the web version of Lemmy.
Fuck I typed it wrong. That’s embarassing, this is why we need that stupid auto markdown thing removed because I can’t use it or it links the community wrong and I have to type it out manually to avoid it being a hard link to the original version
@dessalines@lemmy.ml @nutomic@lemmy.ml Please make the autocorrect for communities stop filling in a Markdown link like this [!lemmy@lemmy.ml](https://lemmy.ml/c/lemmy)
and just have it autocorrect to the correct annotation like this !lemmy@lemmy.ml. We don’t need it to insert Markdown links like that anymore because the software does it automatically.
I don’t know if I or someone else already made an issue for it but I think it’s also good to show it causing problems on the field too.
we just have to not be assholes about it
Unfortunately that’s not possible for the people who are whining and complaining about blahaj here. They’re incapable of not being assholes which is why they got banned in the first place.
You got your answer long ago. You Deserved It, They Deserved it. You and them are indeed gatekeeping other people’s identities and accusing them of being evil for identifying that way. Also for the record calling people out for gatekeeping and hostility is not “harassing minorities” people don’t get a free pass because they’re trans sweetie, if they’re gatekeeping assholes they get called out. Whether they scream bigotry afterwards or not is their choice but when they chose to falsely scream bigotry it says more about them than the person calling them out, and ironically puts them in that bad situation of being harmful since crying wolf about transphobia ends up being more harmful than helpful.
“It’s not mod abuse if I think they had it coming for Wrongthink, and even discussing the possibility should be banned.”
“I’m just going to ignore every point he makes and make up some worthless garbage about banning by disagreement because I can’t address Draconic’s actual points”
I agree, this community should be a place to discuss mod abuse, not bellyache over transphobia and hate speech being censored or being banned from it. Such discourse makes this community extremely toxic and unusable to vulnerable groups, it also creates inherent bias here favoring alt-right shitheads.
I think @ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone would very much agree with this decision as well.
Arguing in bad faith as always eh? Just for the record I called them transphobic and fascist not because they disagree with me but because their attitude of dismissing gender identities is transphobic and is indeed reminiscent of fascist behavior. But continue arguing in bad faith and lying, it’s what you do best.
They just banned him from blahaj.zone and he’s been bellyaching about it for a while.
I think the signup issues are mostly due to inexperienced admins not knowing how or that they can set up automated moderation for spam, or just not configuring their email server correctly.
Once we have better Anti-spam tooling that is more user-friendly it’ll be easier to get people onboard, and really only specialized niche instances should be using the application process, otherwise it does hinder growth and openness as a community. Already talked about this in my other comment but it is not good for Lemmy or the Fediverse as a whole to treat every instance like a club with applications to sign up, it limits people and makes it harder for normies to join, which needs to happen otherwise communities lack the life and activity they otherwise would and it becomes less useful as a social platform.
