That country has next to zero nuance available come election day. You can’t just say everyone who’s against the obvious fascist was therefore all-in on Biden. If they had a better option they would have taken it. Well, I suppose you can say that stuff if you aren’t paying attention or acting in good faith.

I have several trans friends these days and two of them were friends all the way back in highschool, in a different city. They’ve recently found themselves distant from one another because there is a clash in ideologies.

One lays lower, goes about their business, and goes to queer events and all that stuff, though they’re still out there visibly trans. The other is very much an activist and will straight up yell at people on the street, I hear, and protests they organize have had at least one physical clash, to my knowledge. I can’t blame either of them, really, for the caution in these volatile times or the aggression when they’re pretty much the only group of people reliably standing up for their rights. The specific issue that came up was a whole thing, but suffice it to say there was a disagreement on tactics similar to what you mentioned.

Ultimately I think the no interaction thing is not a bad play. Allies or no, we aren’t them and while some communication is good sometimes it’s important to be reminded that we’ve entered someone else’s space. Not only someone else’s space, but space belonging to people who are constantly harrassed and feeling cornered just by existing and who will understably defend what little they do have with a maybe…overzealous approach. By the stories here are they handling it well? God no, that sounds wild, but my point still stands.

It goes for any margainalized group, I suppose, that by nature of being pushed aside one lives in a world where they must speak multiple “languages” and learn about how to live in more than one way. They end up generally being better people for it, but that doesn’t at all mean that every single one is better. For all the supportive, kind, and otherwise chill trans people there are still a very small handful who do things like forget who their allies are or even who go way off the deep-end and support the GOP or whatever equalivalent in their country.

This person I’m replying to believes that if the world just waits it out that American can be a shining beacon of hope with just a few changes. That is not the case, and the people of the US need to understand that the rest of the world does not believe them to be the main characters the same way they do.

Even many well-meaning in the US are taught a history that paints them as heroes and downplays the efforts of others. Many believe they won WW2, after joing exceptionally late and only because they themselves were attacked. It is a selfish nation, and I do not care(in this instance) about the good people who live there if the country and all it’s might are used to destroy the lives of others.

I have good friends who are from the US and there are many strangers to me from there who equally don’t deserve the consequences of what’s happening. I am still avoiding buying from there, and as Trump said himself that step one of trying to take over Canada would be to attempt to cripple us economically right before enacting tariffs meant specifically to cripple us economically I consider the US an enemy state actively trying to wage war against us.

Do not tell me to be so kind and gentle to someone who thinks that in four years, if they even manage to elect one of their lukewarm centre-right Democrats back into office, that I should breathe a great sigh of relief and pretend everything is back to normal. The US, as a country, is a terrible place filled with all manner of cruel monsters.

Most people only get along with the US because they feel like have to, or because they aren’t paying attention to what happens when you get on their bad side for doing things like trying to develop democracy(Latin America, anyone?). Your country was already in the hole but we still had you tied to a rope and were desperately propping you up because you have the keys to van. Hi, car owner here. I do all the work myself and it requires a fair bit of knowledge, expensive tools, space, and a childhood where I was never told I couldn’t do that work if I was thoughtful about it. That’s a high fuckin’ bar and requires a whole lot of privilege-oh there it is, too many people with privilege like to shit on those without and most of North America has dogshit for public transit or bike infrastructure and the “freedom of movement” with a car is all there but heavily artificial.
