  • But could there have been a slower spreading variant first, circulating in stealth mode in the world? I fully believe that Western neoliberal healthcare could have missed these if they were singular unexplained pneunomia looking things in the elderly or anyone, we just treat symptoms if people aren’t dying.

Maybe whatever got introduced to China was already a variant that was able to take off better? Tourism could have a role here that nobody would want to look into as that too is important to the economy.

I know that the og variant got completely eradicated from my country and the following one was introduced by a single group of petty bourge alpine skiiers that travelled to Austria. It took months for the new variant to take off here, but it was traced back to those tourists.

Afaik even cats can get it. Stray cats are common in touristy places like the mediterranean cities. Who knows honestly, but the white paper does claim it wasn’t found in wildlife around Wuhan.

  • Well this. We know now that it thrives on fur farms for example. What if it originated in those, plenty of such farms in the “West”. In Finland for example the conditions are notoriously bad and there is no oversight.

I remember when it finally got aknowledged that white-tail deer are a coronavirus reservoir. Our local food and safety department announced that there is no need to test anything because there is no risk for spillover and covid-19 isn’t foodborne. They just stated that. So the motivation to test, track and understand just isn’t there in capitalist states.

The bird flu also thrives on fur farms and the “solution” this country chose was to allow the fur farmers to shoot the birds, even rare birds, around the farms to protect their industrialized animal cruelty business.

Huge malpractice, cruelty and overproduction issues were also revealed in local salmon farming. Dead birds in the tanks, the fish are suffocating and sick.

I don’t necessarily think the lab leak is likely, but I definitely think it could have started somewhere else than China and been imported there. Due to the general lack of oversight, lack of systems to notice a novel pathogen and just neoliberal capitalism being the way it is.

The Chinese hypothesis seems to still be that frozen food was the source.

  • Not really, but I’ll list what I used in it, ballpark-edition:

3 deciliters of cooking oats, a can of black beans (230grams drained), one whole red bell pepper diced, one onion diced, garlic to taste & olive oil to taste. Spice it with stuff like black pepper, herbs or whatever feels nice.

These are mixed and spread in an oven pan that has a bit if olive oil in it as coating.

Pour over about 700ml of hot water with a stock cube melted in it.

Cook for about 45mins or so, oven was 175C. Add water if it goes too dry, but some crispyness on top and bottom is the goal. It has a fried rice/paella type of vibe.

This can be done in numerous spice variations and with different beans and veg. Tomatoes or tomato paste work well too.

These oats also make a really good pan “risotto”.

  • I was in conversation with a friend who works in tech and we were talking about a thing that we wanted to find some science on. So I found a paper on it and started to read, but before I got done he replied by sending me a chat gpt summary of the paper. And I could already tell it wasn’t correct from reading it myself even a little. What I really wanted to say to him was that I’d rather think for myself, tyvm.

If students are all doing this now, nobody will think of anything themselves anymore or form an actual deep understanding of a thing, be it whatever. Not really. Anyone who has done reading knows how that shapes us and then can develop into something deeper. It’s the f’n “innovation” these same tech types go on and on about that dies with this tech.

  • Absolute demons. I’ve been around on the internet since irc and remember so well how FB became a thing and how fast it all went sour. As far as I remember FB rolled out these anonymous comparison “games” early on and there were also stuff where you “bought” your hot friends or bidded for them. It brought out bullies and mean behaviour out of people in ways I can’t describe now and it was all downhill from there. The testing for this vulnerability was there from day one.

And the way it disconnected us. I remember noticing how pretty soon nobody would call or text you anymore. Old “friends” saw each other less and less because “I follow you on FB, so we are connected.”

Then came IG. The number that and the modern selfies started to do on my grown-ass womans mental health was so clear in hindsight. I started to notice this when I began to see how I felt about pictures taken of me by others compared to the selfie cam filtered stuff that never actually looked like me.

Tried to disable all the filters, tried to adjust the timeline and follow things that would harm me less, but eventually deleted my accounts and it has been one of the greatest things I’ve done in the last 5 years for my mental health, self-image and body image.

I found some of these IG selfies a year or two ago from my old phone and it was legitimally kind of scary how foreing and weird they look to me now. The unnaturally big eyes, the altered jaw line, the ridiculously smooth skin. And I was willingly doing that, most of us are.
