Edit: official voting now happening here: https://codeberg.org/comaps/Governance/issues/34
Please comment with your name ideas.
One name per comment.
Top level comments should just be the name. You can put reasons and discuss each idea in the comments below each suggestion.
And vote on what you like!
Nonorganic Maps?
I keed, I keed.
Voting for names is now open:
@CubeOfCheese YaMap (Yet Another Map App)
Keep CoMaps.
I like this name: it’s cute, short and memorable. I also like that ‘co-’ can have multiple meanings (cooperation, coexisting, community, carbon monoxyde).
A quick search for comaps shows a couple different projects already using that name. comaps.de is some kind of map visualization. Using the comaps name could lead to some confusion.
When you search for “Gentoo”, you sometimes get results for a real estate company with the same name. Name collisions are nothing to fear about, unless the name is a registeted trademark in multiple countries.
Name collisions are okay if they are not in competing industries. That’s why you can have Apple computers. No one is going to confuse that trademark for an apple orchard company because it’s a completely different industry. In this case though, it looks like that other project is also related to mapping
Folk Maps
I like folk maps, really gives the correct community/citizen cartography vibe
+1 Folk Maps
Could you split it up so that it’s one name per comment please? To make voting easier
Sure thing! I have the split the options into multiple comments.
Oh um. I mean like each comment is completely independent. That way when people vote the top level comments are ordered appropriately

Carbon Maps
A play on organic meaning carbon-based (as in organic chemistry). Also I feel like it should be easy(ish) for speakers of other languages to pronounce. I may be wrong though!
Delta Maps (like the fork in the river)
It’s not bad, but
- There might be too many projects named “Delta ___”. (…I’m guessing. I can really only think of Delta Chat.)
- Is being a fork the only identity of this project? I would rather the name reflect other characteristics… 🤔
Lief Maps
- after explorer Lief Erickson
Alternate spelling of Leaf Maps as well (since most people will mis-hear and type the English word rather than the name) and maybe a leafy Lief is the mascot ;)
Wait I think I like this better
It’s neat, but would cause confusion with https://leafmap.org/
hard to spell, leaf, leave

Maps 'r Us
Cartogrity (Cartography + Community)
I liked your suggestion quite a lot and came up with alternative based on it (the two words staying the same):
CartoUnity
CoCoMaps (community + collaboration)
Unfortunately there seems to be existing software with this name.
Maple
Idk, but Maple might be protected, as it’s already the name of a symbolic math software.
Map1e ?
🙃
Perfect.
because who doesn’t like its syrup
Mappa
Unfortunately there seems to be a number of existing software with this name.
Admittedly I only did a 30 second search and got the aforementioned Japanese company and something to do with the UK government. I thought it was probably too good to be true.
It’s a great name. A lot of people seem to agree 😄
Like Cuppa for a cup of tea
Mappa is also italian for map. People of saints, poets and navigators, says the saying
Edited the original comment to comply with the rules. Cut ‘n’ paste of reasoning:
It’s the Latin word for map, at least according to Google, and there doesn’t appear to be any similar entities using the name, just a Japanese animation studio.
It also rolls nicely off the tongue. “Have you checked on Mappa?”
Origami Maps
I’ll duplicate it here

to be honest, no word makes me completely satisfied.
