With the escalation in Gaza and West Bank on top of the incident I’m going to limit how much I spend on telegram, lemmy, etc. because I can get massively hyperfocussed on this shit. Feels a lot like when the Ukraine Russia war heated up and I was stuck to my phone 8 hours a day.

I’m lucky enough to have started my meds recently which are absolutely eviscerating my anxiety, but others aren’t so lucky.

Maybe delete a couple of apps and limit your exposure for a couple of days so even if you DO doomscroll it’s less paralysing.

The new world struggles to be born ❤️

when european imperialism got its first foothold in mainland north american in mexico city; it became known as the noche triste and this part of your comment reminded me of this memorable quote attributed to that night (translated):

“It was a defeat for some, a victory for others, but on that night, amid blood and tears, the Mexican people were born”

everyone throughout the entire global south now have their own version of the noche triste and i think it helps to frame it this way as we watch helplessly while modern day imperialism does the same thing to the gazans, iranians, & ukrainians that classic imperialism did to the mexicans/native-americans/first-nations, aboriginals, jews, etc. throughout the world.

it’s especially troubling to me that they’re employing the exact same tactics like mass starvation; collective punishment; and ethnic cleansing that they employed in history and people universally accept that those historical episodes were genocides and holocausts, but refuse to apply those same labels to today’s episodes; as well as the fact that all of today’s episodes are perpetuated by same hegemony as the most recent historical ones.

I’ve grown weirdly Zen about this shit.

I’ve just accepted I don’t have any real control over anything and what happens happens. I’m just trying to enjoy myself, been playing a lot of Stardew and drinking wine, rewatching old BOTW episodes I like, taking naps.

If something happens I’ll either adapt or die, if nothing happens hopefully I’ll be able to keep chugging along.

It’s so hard. I tell myself consuming won’t change anything but if I look away things are changing without me knowing. Politics is one of my main interest.

    • I do think part of this habit is some of us do genuinely enjoy following events and staying informed. I really don’t think mentally it’s all that different than following a TV show or whatever, just with the anxiety that what’s happening on the screen could end up in your backyard.

Agreed. I don’t think its about necessarily ignoring or permanently unplugging, but for example using RSS feeds to get news in a more structured manner, or temporarily uninstalling apps and reinstalling later to catch up on things.

Like, I’m super interested in this stuff too, but also I don’t need to know the up to the minute headlines on what is happening on the front lines of Ukraine, or the minute by minute preparations of Iranian ballistic missile bases. But having those apps on my phone during these specific times makes it likely that I’ll be refreshing constantly.

In the end it’s not about un-informing ourselves but accepting that a small delay in that information will do our souls some benefit.

Try making an RSS feed and sticking to offbeat or informative sources (avoid AFP, AP, Reuters, Western mainstream media as a whole, or reactionary media anywhere, whatever they say which is actually important will be repeated elsewhere). I can imagine why Telegram and Lemmy would bother you, as many people get invested in a particular interpretation or prediction. This makes it a lot more stressful to figure out what’s going on.

Doomscrolling is a lot like gambling where you keep going, thinking you’re going to finally hit something that makes you feel good (or smart or important). It’s important to break out of that cycle, because it is addicting.

Of course if it helps to keep on top of news then find ways that are healthier than apps designed to sap our attention. I’ll keep lemmy but shit like telegram and bluesky etc. are way easier to get sucked into.

Someone else in this thread said they spent 8 hours a day on their phone when Russia/Ukraine started.

I stay tuned into the news here and check it periodically but if it’s hurting your mental health, there’s absolutely no reason to be glued into the war minutiae. You don’t need hourly updates on which bombs landed where to be informed. You don’t need a constant feed of gore to know that Israel is genocidal pariah state and to do whatever you can from thousands of miles away.

Not saying you should ignore the state of the world, or stop talking about it (I’ve done the opposite today) but social media is not conducive to that effort, even if the face of it may seem informative.

Taking breaks from apps that turn these events into pseudo-entertainment and attention sucking vacuums makes it harder to engage with that.

Absolutely. Im so numb to the violence but it still overwhelms me. It’s good that you still feel that emotion for others, we must always remember that a revolutionary is guided by great feelings of love ❤️
