Muslim women are only allowed to expose their face and hands according to the traditional understanding, and even the face is a lot according to some who order women to cover the cover the face as well. Many sheikhs become angry if a few strand of hair get exposed.
But Christian women don’t have such strict, rigid dress code for them, as you can see in the right picture, dress like this where they don’t cover their arms, legs, head, neck would be accepted as modest by their Churches. People on this subreddit won’t find any immodesty in them either, but a lot of Mainstream Muslims surely do.
What is the reason?
In my general regional area, I’ve seen Muslim women in everything from booty shorts and spaghetti straps to full burqa.

Fundamentalism. If you look at photos of women in Iran in the 1970s, they look like the photo on the right for example.
There is currently a fundamentalist Christianity movement pushing for subservient women in the US.

I’m an atheist, but What you consider “mainstream” is a little bit wrong in my opinion. I don’t know if there’s been a world wide study on the percentage of women in each religion that wear what we would call restrictive, but it isn’t that different. Indonesia has the largest Muslim population in the world and when you think of Indonesian women restrictive clothing and way of life, doesn’t come across as more draconian than devout Catholic women in my Hispanic area. I think this is more a case of which group gets more attention in our bubbles. Western nations just can’t stop focusing on what’s going on in Muslim dominated areas because of oil and holy locations. Casting them as somehow backwards is how we justify bombings and occupations.

Reactionary resistance to western imperialism, colonialism, occupation, and supremacy. That and the US propping up fundamentalist groups like ISIS and supporting fundamentalist client states like Saudi Arabia. The material conditions of the MENA region have been violently crippled by Western forces for hegemonic control of the region and resources.

We here recognize one of the laws of the psychology of colonization. Also major crisis usually makes people return to fundamentalist views. Many Islam based societies were well on their way to reform and improvement, but then the west kinda went and bombed the shit out of them to get their natural resources. I think its fair to largely attribute stagnation in Islams progress towards womens rights to the wars and bombings funded by the US and Russia.
That doesnt excuse their treatment of women, but it might explain it to a degree. The more peaceful and fair the environment, the less religeous people become. The less religeous people become, the better they treat women and people of other beliefs.
Anti-communism. Most countries in the mid east were much more progressive until the 60s or 70s, when the west started to encourage religious radicals to counter soviet influence.
But as somebody else said, this is not mainstream islam!
It looks like Islamic socialism is still active, which is hopeful. I wonder if it’ll gain more ground as the US empire crumbles
